Zywiec Marcowe Lager

ABV:  5.4%
Overall Rating:  4/5
Head:  Medium/fast depletion
Pairing:  It went just fine with some dark chocolate, but I plan to try with pizza and bratwurst sometime soon.
Price:  About $2/each 1 pt. 0.9 fl. oz. bottle

From Zywiec, Poland comes their Marcowe Lager.  This was a smooth and fairly light bodied brew with a nice balance of barley and subtle hop flavor.  It was easy to drink and had a clean finish.

The appearance wasn’t too bad either, as an attractive golden amber.  A nice change of pace from my usual darks.

Zywiec Bock (a stronger variety) was, I guess one can say, my gateway drink to the porter style, and I am a true advocate of both.  Unlike Zywiec Bock, Zywiec Marcowe is hardly sweet, yet both are lagers of exceptional quality.

I can’t really say anything negative about this beer, unless I say it’s taste is a bit more mainstream than what I usually drink.  Nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience and will drink it again, no doubt.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5
ABV: 6.8%
Head: medium depletion
Pairing Suggested: pizza

The Windy City of Chicago, Illinois has more than great pizza, dogs, and beef.  They have Revolution Beer!

Eugene Porter is one of their fine varieties.  This is a quality robust brew comprised of dark chocolate malts and caramel flavors.  There is a slightly sweet finish and it actually goes great with your favorite pizza.  At least, this was the case for me.

You can get this on tap or at certain Target store locations.  I picked up a 6 pack of 12 ounce cans there for about $12.  I believe it goes on sale for about $10, when there’s a promo.

I thoroughly enjoyed this beer.  It ranks up there as my second favorite porter.

Overall Rating: 2.5/5
ABV: 5.5%
Head: slow depletion, bitter
Pairing Suggested: dark chocolate

From the Central Waters Brewing Co. in Amherst, Wisconsin, I took a gander at their Mudpuppy Porter.  Despite the fairly good rating that it gets, it’s a bit too bitter for me.  There is somewhat of a hoppy finish that perhaps should be left in the IPA genre.  Notes of burnt coffee and a hint of chocolate come into play.

The look and aroma aren’t too bad, however.  Overall, not quite my taste, but I imagine others may disagree, depending on preference.

Pairing with some dark chocolate helped improve the experience, yet it’s still a notch off to be a nice change of pace when compared to others.  I just wasn’t too impressed.

Overall Rating: 5/5
ABV: 7.2%
Head: slow depletion, frothy and sweet
Pairing Suggested: dark chocolate or enjoy it by itself

From the Browar Amber Brewery in Gdansk, Poland, this might just be the most delicious porter style beer available.  Now, I haven’t tried them all, but out of all that I have, this my favorite!  I love this beer.

It’s composition is of dark malts aged to perfection.  Chocolate, coffee, and whiskey notes are prominent in its robust flavor.  The color is quite dark and the head is frothy and sweet.

Dark chocolate makes for an excellent compliment to the experience.  If you haven’t tried dark chocolate and this type beer, you are missing out.

The origin of porter style beer goes back to the 1700’s in London, England.  Stout style is a spin-off of porter and is less sweet, lighter, and creamier.  It was how I originally discovered the porter style.  Enjoy!
